Ways to get yourself noticed at work (In A Good Way)

Want to get noticed at work in a good way? Read this write up from Forbes.com.
Sometimes, just coming to work each day and doing your job isn’t enough to get yourself noticed by upper management. If you want to get great assignments and projects or be promoted into higher-level jobs, you’ll need to do things that make you stand out from others (in a good way).

Question: I’m facing a problem at work. I want to get noticed for what I do, but other people just don’t seem to even see me. I don’t get asked to be on project teams and never seem to be given the really cool assignments. Now there’s a new employee who just started in my department and everyone seems to like her way more than they like me. She’s always getting assigned to new and fun projects and my coworkers have started going to her for help or advice. What can I do so I’ll get noticed at work?
Answer: Here are some of the best ways to get noticed at work.
  • Do an absolutely excellent job with every task, every day. Doing so-so work won’t get you noticed. To stand out (and get promoted, if that’s your goal), you need to do outstanding work that will get you seen by your boss and others in management roles. Look for ways you can go above and beyond the daily requirements to demonstrate how you add value to the organization.
  • Volunteer. Raise your hand and volunteer for projects or work assignments where you can use your skills to help other employees and so that coworkers and management will have an opportunity to see how great you are.
  • Work hard to get along with everyone. Learn how to play nice with others. Flex your style so you can get along with any personality type, even if you don’t like the person.
  • Offer to help coworkers. Don’t wait for someone to approach you; offer your help to others when it appears they might need some help. Don’t expect any return favors – help others because you want to, not because you expect something in return.
  • Become an expert in something. People turn to the experts for advice and to solve problems. Look for areas in your business where you can put your skills to use and become an expert. Then, volunteer for projects that will allow you to use these skills and show them off.
  • Continuously prove that you’re an asset to the company. You might have done a great job completing a recent project. But guess what? Now, you have to do it all over again. Every day when you go to work, you need to prove your value to your boss.
  • Create a career development plan and then share it with your manager. Never forget that your career is your responsibility. Start treating yourself like a product that you work on improving, year after year. Define your career aspirations, create a career development plan and then share this information with your boss and ask for his or her help and support.
