Sam Smith Says He Needs Surgery on his Vocal Cords

The 22-year-old British singer was forced to call off a number of shows after doctors discovered bleeding in his throat.
He has flown to the US to see a specialist surgeon and said he was "really nervous" about next week's op.
His tweet after the cut.

Smith said he was "gutted" to be missing the shows, but doctors told him he would be performing again in six to eight weeks.
He tweeted: "I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I'm going to need surgery."

He was forced to pull out of the second half of his Australian tour because he was "vocally exhausted" and wanted to avoid more serious damage.
Smith - who has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame in the last few years - has also cancelled a series of shows in Japan and Manila.

In a separate post on Instagram, he said: "Bad news. I have my operation booked for next week, so getting really nervous.
"But by doing this in 8 weeks' time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it. I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can't speak for three weeks after the op."
