Kanye West will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards, it was announced on Tuesday.
West is being celebrated for “his career-spanning groundbreaking videos, legendary VMA performances, and continued impact on music, art, fashion, and culture.” MTV further notes the rapper’s honor is for the way he’s “blended musical and visual artistry to powerful effect.” “From his trilogy of videos for ‘Jesus Walks,’ to the mind-bending animation of ‘Heartless,’ to the arresting imagery of ‘Bound 2,’ he’s pushed boundaries and delivered something new with every successive video,” says the network.
The Vanguard Award is the VMAs’ highest honor, and was previously called the Lifetime Achievement Award and just the Video Vanguard Award until 1991, when it was renamed for Jackson. In the years since, the award has been given to superstars ranging from Madonna to the Beastie Boys. Britney Spears (2011), Justin Timberlake (2013), and Beyoncé (2014) were the most recent honorees.
West only received one VMA nomination this year. He is part of the Best Video with a Social Message nominees for collaborating with Big Sean and John Legend on the clip for “One Man Can Change The World.” The VMAs will be held in Los Angeles on Sunday, with Miley Cyrus as host, and Gossip Cop will have full coverage.
