This is all going left. Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family filed a $40 million civil lawsuit against Nick Gordon, June 24, accused him of stealing money from her and savagely beating her. Now a top attorney is speaking out on the possible reason they waited 4 months to file this lawsuit.
Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family wants Nick Gordon, 24, to know that he’s not going to get away with allegedly stealing $11,000 of Bobbi’s money after she was in a coma. But why did the family wait to long to take any legal action against Nick? Robert Aitkens of Atlanta, GA based, Aitkens of Aitkens & Aitkens Law Firm tells HollywoodLife.com that the timing may be because the family is concerned Nick will try and claim he was married to Bobbi and attempt to go after her multi-million dollar inheritance after her death.
“It is possible that someone is afraid that [Nick] is going to claim that he and Bobbi Kristina were married and that he would be an heir at law and entitled to her estate. This will be a tall order if there are no court documents stating they were ever married, since Georgia law does not recognize common law marriage after the late 1990’s. However, the conservator or family may want to protect her assets from claims made by him.It sends a message to Nick Gordon that no matter how financially successful you are with your life, you will always have to pay for the wrongful death of Bobbi Kristina because she is no longer alive.” Bobbi Kristina’s estate filed a $40 million lawsuit against Nick on June 24, in the suit he is accused of not only stealing money from Bobbi but also allegedly physically abusing her. When she was found in her bathtub on Jan. 31, she reportedly had a tooth punching out and a swollen face.
Robert mentions that the family could also file a wrongful death suit once Bobbi dies.”If the facts justify a belief that he is legally responsible for her death, the heirs at law (or next of kin) possess the wrongful death claim against the person causing the death of the deceased and would seek damages for the value of her life,” he tells us. “The estate would have the claim for personal injuries and conscious pain and suffering that she endured prior to her death. This situation is somewhat unique to Georgia.”
Bobbi’s lawyer, Bedelia C. Hargrove released the following statement along with the lawsuit on June 24: “Today I filed a lawsuit on behalf of Bobbi Kristina Brown. I filed this lawsuit to pursue justice on behalf of Bobbi Kristina Brown. No human being, male or female, should endure what Bobbi Kristina endured.” Meanwhile, Nick has deleted his Twitter account and hasn’t made any public comments.
