Rachel Dolezal has announced that she will resign from the Spokane chapter of the NAACP, of which she serves as president. The news comes on the heels of the discovery that Rachel had been falsely identifying as African American.
On June 12, Rachel Dolezal, 37, came under worldwide fire when her parents came forward to declare that their daughter had been posing as African American (Read here), when she was in fact white.
Rachel, who has served as the president of the NAACP branch in Spokane, Washington, announced on June 15 that she will relinquish her position. Rachel posted on the chapter’s Facebook page to personally share the news.
“It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the NAACP that I step aside from the Presidency and pass the baton to my Vice President, Naima Quarles-Burnley,” Rachel wrote. “It is my hope that by securing a beautiful office for the organization in the heart of downtown, bringing the local branch into financial compliance, catalyzing committees to do strategic work in the five Game Changer issues, launching community forums, putting the membership on a fast climb, and helping many individuals find the legal, financial and practical support needed to fight race-based discrimination, I have positioned the Spokane NAACP to buttress this transition.”
Following the revelation of Rachel’s actual race, a reporter in Spokane asked her directly whether she was black. “That’s a very… I Mean I don’t know what you’re implying,” she said. “I don’t understand the question,” she added before walking off camera.
Following the immediate uproar, Rachel’s father, Lawrence Dolezal, said of he and Rachel’s mother, “We are definitely her birth parents. We are both of caucasian and European descent — Czech, German and a few other things.” To leave no room for question, Rachel’s parents also provided her birth certificate, proving definitively that they are her biological parents.
