Jason Derulo did NOT fall down the stairs at the Met Gala, despite what you may have read and seen on Twitter. In fact, the photo wasn’t even taken at the Met Ball.
As the 2015 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala got underway in New York City on Monday, a photo began circulating on social media showing a guy tripping and then tumbling backwards on red-carpeted stairs. While it’s not exactly clear how the association began, many on Twitter became convinced it was Derulo, and his name quickly became a trending topic both in the United States and worldwide. But it was not a picture of Derulo.

In actuality, the snapshot was of another man (who, by the way, is not black), at the Cannes Film Festival nearly four years ago. And for the record, Derulo wasn’t even at the Met Gala. And he wasn’t even in New York, or even on the East Coast, either.

After hundreds of people wrongly mocked Derulo on Twitter for his stumbling supposed mishap, the singer took to Instagram to call out the misinformed commenters who were so quick to mistakenly make fun of him. “Lmao I’m at rehearsal in LA. Fuq ya’ll! Lol,” wrote the performer, along with the photo below.
