Some Chelsea supporters were last night caught on camera, pushing a black passenger off a Metro train in Paris.
The incident happened moments before kick off of their match against Paris Saint-Germain, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
UK police are to examine
video footage in a bid to identify Chelsea football fans who appeared to
stop a black man from boarding a Paris train.
The amateur video shows a man being repeatedly pushed from
the train while a group chants, "we're racist, we're racist and that's
the way we like it". Scotland Yard said it was taking the incident "very seriously".
Chelsea condemned the incident and issued an appeal for witnesses, saying any fans involved faced a ban.
Chelsea have already reacted to the incident, with a club
spokesperson stating: “Such behaviour is abhorrent and has no place in
football or society."
“We will support any criminal action against those involved, and
should evidence point to involvement of Chelsea season-ticket holders or
members the club will take the strongest possible action against them,
including banning orders.”
The thuggery and racism of the Chelsea supporters filmed shoving a black
passenger off the waiting train in the Paris Métro on a prestigious
European football night were laden with symbolism as well as shock. The
fact it happened underground carried a powerful signal that such
unabashed racist chanting, and these people’s sense of entitlement to
casually assault a complete stranger, persist despite all football’s
many campaigns and efforts to counter it, including by Chelsea themselves.
